P16 - Animatic Storyboard

When creating the animatic storyboard, we struggled to get it complete due to various reasons. For example, firstly, we screen shot the storyboard on storyboard that as we were only allowed to create two a week. Therefore instead of creating separate storyboard every week, we reused the same ones and screenshot the frames so we could order it correctly on word. This meant that we screenshot it to various places, making it hard for both myself and Sharmila to find them all again as we both took the job of doing half and half. Hence, why when it came to creating the animatic weeks later, we got not track it all down.

Our second problem was that when I had taken the laptop home to finish the storyboard, I had completed more than half of the animatic. However due to my stupidity, I used the audio files from my USB instead of transferring the music and sound effects onto the actual laptop. So when I opened up the laptop the next day to complete it, all the sound effects and sounds I had added 'could not be found'.

Another problem was that the software does not allow you to layer audio files onto each other. Thats why our animatic's outcome was so structured and did not have a flow to it. If we were able to layer them, then we would be able to incorporate more of the sounds that we wanted to add. For example, when Hasan is running, all you can hear in the animatic is him running, however we wanted to add the tension music to add suspense, as well as footsteps running through grass to have an overall complete and realistic effect.

Our animatic storyboard is a make shift version of our film as there is much more that we would like to add.

P13 - Hair, Make-up and Special FX

Hair
  • As some of the actresses that we would like to use in our short film wear a hijab, we have accepted their requests in wearing this as we think it will show diversity and multiculturalism within the film.
  • The actresses that do not wear a head scarf will be given hairstyles accustom to their characters - Hasan's friend will have her hair out, representing a teenage girl, however the mother will have a more sophisticated look with a blow dry.
  • The character of Shahin is presented as rough through his costume therefore his hair will be scruffy and messy to add to its nature.
  • Hasan has a more accomplished look as he likes to take care of the way he looks. His hair will be more clean and tidy of a side swept quiff.
  • The ghost/ghoul's hair will be rotten and deteriorated and falling out, adding to the effect of him seeming disgusting. His hair will be green, differing from any of the other characters and solely making him stand out and defining him as something to stay away from.
Make Up
  • All the girls in the short film will have a natural look. Sharmila and her friends will hardly wear make up. Mainly foundation and mascara and bronzer, as research into girls have found that in this day and age, young girls have started wearing make up from the age of 13.
  • Simi will wear mainly foundation, mascara and eye liner with contour to contrast with the other girls and show she is more older.
  • Hasan and Shahin will go bare to present a more real representation of teenage boys as opposed to creating them into a model with perfect skin. This allows the audience to feel as if having skin with spots is okay - also showing the girls that make up is not always necessarily needed.
  • The mother will have a more darker lip to show she is more sophisticated. Yet her eyes will be very minimal as she is a mother and has less time to do her make up.
  •
  • The ghost's make up will present a very pale face but also very bloodied. His eyes will be blacked out as well as it's mouth however blood will be dripping down it's face. The bruising around the face will make the ghost look very sickly, making the audience fell uncomfortable to look at it.
Special FX
  • This is mainly for the ghost/ghoul
  • Inspiration was taken from @akhanartistry (Aisha Khan) who is a very popular special effects make up artists who focuses on the gore of make up.
  • She is also on YouTube where she does tutorials with step by step instructions on how to create the same look.
  • A video posted by Aisha Khan (@akhanartistry) on
  • This is one of the main ideas that we took inspiration from. Instead of a pumpkin, we wanted to do a 'J' for 'Jack' when Hasan sees something on his hand, however when he looks back at it, it's gone.
  • There are also various other ideas that we would incorporate from ideas that we have seen on her Instagram page such as the big, bloodied mouth etc.

P10 - Film Poster Draft & Feedback

From the feedback I received, it was suggested that I put the ghost that I have from the film, into the poster however not so that it stands out to the eye. The person who suggested it, said that it should be so that when the audience looks closer at the poster, that is when they can see the ghost's figurine more clearly as opposed to from afar. Both feedbacks accepts the concepts that I have incorporated into the poster, but have mention slight suggestions in improving the poster which I will take on board.

[They both try and get the ball out of the bush but cannot reach it – instead Shahin gets a dirty jack-in-the-box out]

Shahin: Look what I found (curiously)

Hasan: [to himself] Where is the ball?

Shahin: Oi man, look at this, it’s a jack-in-the-box!

Hasan: Are you a baby or something, imagine how old that is, put it back and help me get the ball

[Hasan is still trying to put his hand in the bush to reach for the ball – Simi walks to Shahin to see the jack-in-the-box]

Simi: Ew, that is disgusting!

Shahin: Open it!

[Shahin throws it to Simi, and she squirms from its’ dirtiness and throws it back to him]

Simi: Are you dumb? You do it.

[Hasan gets up irritated and takes the box off Shahin]

Shahin: Nah man, actually leave it that looks dodgy.

Hasan: No, if you two wanna see what is inside that bad, I’ll show you!

[He begins to slowly wind the jack-in-the-box whilst the other two come closer to see. When the box pops open, they all jump and drop the box]

Simi: Why is that so creepy looking if that’s a kid’s toy

Shahin: Well it’s not anymore if it’s been in a bush for god knows how long

Simi: Has ... (Hasan stares at the box and ignores her) Oi! (she nudges him and gains his frozen attention)

Hasan: Yeah, what?

Simi: Are you okay?

Hasan: Why wouldn’t I be?

Shahin: (laughing) why you getting so scared, it’s just a dumb box.

Hasan: How am I getting scared?

Simi: All right, lets go its getting cold.

[Simi and Shahin are walking off, leaving Hasan behind them; he picks up the box and hides it in his bag]

…Yeah it was all right. [Her focus moves onto the box in his bag] What’s that? Did you get me something? Aw!

Hasan: Um…no it’s a friend’s. So what lesson did you have?

[Hasan hides the shape of the box more into his bag]

Sharmila: Rude. Why are you so interested? You never ask me.

Hasan: Gosh, can’t I just ask without getting…

[Hasan suddenly sees something appear but it vanishes – he stops walking and his sister carries on without realising. His sister’s voice becomes muted whilst the camera is disorientated]

Sharmila: No you can’t… and hurry up.

[The scene is very active with black flashes of a dark figure – Hasan sees something on his hand and tries rubbing it away but it doesn’t go – he runs leaving his sister]

Sharmila: Oi!!! Where are you going??? Hello??

[He doesn’t answer her and just keeps running toward a dark tunnel]

Hasan: Oh god, please… No! [he pants whilst he runs] I haven’t done anything wrong!
[He reaches the end of the tunnel and runs towards the park and up the hill. The ghost flashes past him, and the music gets louder as the figure gets closer. He worries and has a montage of him picking up the box. He realizes he needs to get rid of it and gets the box out of his bag and chucks it]

[He has a breath of relief as all the music stops and he stops running. – His sister catches up to him]

Sharmila: Oi where the hell did you go? Leaving me like that. Thanks a lot, you want to come pick me up and then you run away?

Hasan: Huh, um did you just see that?

Sharmila: See what?

Hasan: Oh, um nothing, leave it.

Sharmila: Weirdo, now can we go?

Hasan: Yeah, please lets get out of here.

Mum: I’ll go check up on him in a bit. Wait, I didn’t say for him to pick you up? I thought you were going with your friends, love?

Sharmila: Ugh! That idiot.

Mum: Honey, it’s okay, he probably just cares.

Sharmila: For once.

Mum: Anyway, how was school?

Sharmila: Yeah it was ok; Mr. Jones wasn’t in for Math’s so we had a supply, no one did any work so that was a waste of time, then there was a fire alarm because some kid accidently pushed it…

[Whilst they keep talk, the camera pans out the kitchen – through the hall – up the stairs – into Hasan’s room – he takes off his jacket off and cannot find his pyjamas - he mutters to himself]

Hasan: Where the hell are my pyjamas?
… Why does mum always touch my stuff? Now I can’t find anything!

[He goes to open his wardrobe as he cannot find it anywhere else]

Hasan: Oh, shit…

[The ghouls face appears with a loud sudden bang and the screen goes black].
